Abstract

In recent decades, with the degradation of natural stocks of traditional commercial species, the shrimp-Barba-ruça, Artemesia longinaris, has emerged as a species with wide commercial activity, with higher number of individuals in the catch compared to the traditional species. The lack of knowledge about the biology of the species decreases the efficiency of alternative applications for protection of natural stocks. An important fact related to strategies for the conservation of fisheries stocks is the reproductive biology of the species. The ovaries of crustaceans have different maturation stages constituting a reproductive cycle. The study of the reproductive cycle is fundamental for a better control of the growth and reproduction of animals kept in captivity and, for the broodstocks. The determination of ovarian stages during the reproductive cycle involves the activities related to the ovary and hepatopancreas. These two organs work in a synchronized manner setting the period of each reproductive cycle. In the female reproductive cycle, there is the importance of yolk production through time destined to vitellogenesis. This process is crucial to the accumulation of nutrients in oocytes causing a rapid increase in the size of the gonads. Vitellogenesis may be endogenous when Vg originates from the oocyte and / or follicular cells, and exogenous when this production is extraovariana, or even occur by both sources. It is suggested that Vg is synthesized from the ovary or hepatopancreas, or both, and may also differ according to the species and stage vitellogenic or moult. In this context, it is known that in penaeid shrimp, Vg is synthesized from the the ovary and hepatopancreas, but the relative contribution of these two tissues in the synthesis of Vg is still uncertain. The present study aims to evaluate the location of production of Vg using immunohistochemical techniques, as well as the quantification of its mRNA by Real Time PCR in females in different stages of ovarian maturation. Considering the effective participation of hepatopancreas this process we intend to still compare the cellular profile of hepatopancreaticos tubules at different stages of ovarian maturation.
