Abstract

The family Molossidae is the 3th largest family of bats in America and is distributed in tropical and temperate areas of the Eastern and Western hemispheres, and despite this, detailed information about the different taxa of the family is scarce, making it difficult interpretations and formulations of evolutionary relationship between taxa. Most proposed phylogenies based on characters from external and cranial morphology and most recently, molecular data are still inconsistent. The objective of this project is therefore to assess aspects of morphological variation with emphasis on the penis glans and the baculum, characterizing them histologically and morphologically, increasing the information about these structures in nine taxa of molossids (Eumops auripendulus, E. glaucinus , E. perotis, Cynomops abrasus, C. planirostris, molossus, M. rufus, and Neoplatymops matogrossensis Molossops temminckii) and possibly facilitating the formulation of phylogenetic relationships among them, since these features are relevant diagnostic characters (taxonomic) which can be used in evolutionary interpretations.
