Abstract

The hymenopteran family Chrysididae comprises parasitic wasps known as "cuckoo wasps" distributed worldwide, being one of the most species-rich within Chrysidoidea. Taxonomic and systematic research on this family has been largely neglected in recent decades, particularly with respect to the Neotropical fauna. In Brazil, the only comprehensive studies of Chrysididae were done by the naturalist Adolfo Ducke, in the early XX century. The goal of this research project is to conduct a phylogenetic study of the genus Ipsiura (Chrysidini), which will allow for advances in its taxonomy. Ipsiura currently comprises 37 nominal valid species and appears to be consistently delimited. However it has never been formally revised nor studied from a phylogenetic viewpoint. Moreover, many of its species were described based on very few specimens, which may obfuscate phenotypic variations and make delimitation of some species potentially problematic. The choice of Ipsiura for this project is justified, therefore, by the scarceness of taxonomic information and lack of previous phylogenetic studies for the Neotropical fauna of cuckoo wasps. This research is expected to contribute with the taxonomic knowledge of the species of Ipsiura occurring in Brazil in detail. This study also aims at evaluating the monophyly of the genus Ipsiura and clarifying the phylogenetic relationships between this genus and other taxa of Chrysidini, based on cladistic analyses using comparative morphological data.
