Abstract The use of ethanol as a renewable energy source becomes increasingly important in the Brazilian energy sector. New technologies such as direct fuel injection, which consists of injecting fuel in spray form directly into the combustion chambers, can use better the greater potential of ethanol than conventional engines. The objective of this project is to develop a computational model based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) of a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine in transient regime, using the technology of direct fuel injection and working with ethanol, including ethanol spray modeling and its combustion in the turbulent regime. The combustion in engines using direct fuel injection is more complex than in conventional engines, often changing the combustion scheme between premixed combustion and partially premixed depending on the power level required of the motor. Robust turbulent combustion models, capable of simulating the various combustion regimes found in this engines will be used, as the hybrid model FGM (Flamelet Generated Manifolds). The computational models will be validated with data available in the literature and with experimental results obtained by the research group in the Laboratory of Thermal and Environmental Engineering (LETE) of the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, including experiments in an engine with optical access using ethanol as fuel.
