Abstract

The main goal of this project is to study and evaluate the traditional numerical techniques used to accelerate simulations of linear electrical systems. The acceleration strategies should be evaluated for stability and accuracy. To achieve these goals will be firstly required to understand the effect of electromagnetic transients in power systems, through the solution of differential equations described in terms of the state variables. The dynamics of electromagnetic transients can then be obtained by applying physical models and computational algorithms. Through the study of the fundamental concepts used in the Electromagnetic Transients Programs (EMTP), it is expected that the student acquires understanding and experience in the study of electromagnetic transients in linear circuits, single-phase or multiphase, with distributed and/or concentrated parameters. The main contribution of this project will be to instruct a researcher who might contribute in improving the performance of electric power systems, through the enhancement of simulators that must be able to deal with real systems, quickly and efficiently.
