Abstract

Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) is a type of physical abuse against children which consists of violently shaking a baby, usually in response to inconsolable crying. It can result in serious consequences for child development, leading even to death. There's just one study published in Brazil about AHT, and it points out the urgent need to training health professionals on this type of abuse. In addition, there are no validated instruments that assess knowledge about the AHT in this country. Thus, this study aims to: (1) develop an instrument which assesses knowledge about AHT and analyze its psychometric parameters; and (2) develop, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention program with health professionals working in Basic Health Units to enable them to act as Abusive Head Trauma prevention agents. In order to achieve these objectives, two studies will be conducted. The first study will involve the construction of Likert-style Abusive Head Trauma Scale and subsequent analyses of its psychometric parameters regarding content validity, semantic analysis, factorial validity and accuracy. The second study involving randomized control trials will consist in developing and implementing a training program for all health professionals that work at Basic Health Units in the city of São Carlos. In order to evaluate the training, the instrument elaborated in first study will be used. In addition, the number of child abuse cases reported to the Child Protection Agency by these professionals will be monitored. As a final activity, each professional team will be expected to implement at their Basic Heath Unit a prevention strategy against Abusive Head Trauma to be monitored over a year.
