Abstract

Transcription factors are molecular regulators that control diverse cellular processes related to development. As such, alterations in the expression patterns of genes that encode transcription factors are the main source of phenotypic diversity underlying evolution. The transcription factors of the TCP family are widely distributed in the plant kingdom. Since their first description in 1999, novel findings demonstrate the importance of this gene family in the evolution and control of plant development and beg for more research on the identification of the biological processes under their control. A role in leaf development has already been attributed to Arabidopsis thaliana TCP5, which is part of the class II genes (CIN-like clade). Nonetheless a role for TCP in reproductive development is missing. This project aims the characterization of the expression patterns of TCP5 during the reproductive development of Arabidopsis, as well as the comparative analysis of the reproductive development of wild-type plants and tcp5 mutants. We also aim to analyze the floral development of a transgenic plant overexpressing TCP5 in the epidermis and double mutants tcp5/tcp13 and tcp5/tcp17. We hope the results obtained in this study would contribute to a better understanding of the roles of the TCP gene family in plant reproductive development
