Abstract

Chronic aortic valve disease is quite prevalent in the world and can manifest as stenosis, insufficiency, or a combination of both types of injury. Aortic valve insufficiency is progressive and insidious, and the severe form may be present for many years without any symptoms. Clinical and echocardiographic markers of adverse outcome in aortic valve dysfunction are overt heart failure, pectoris angina, syncope, systolic ventricular dysfunction; ventricular dilatation, and need for valve replacement therapy. However, the role of diastolic dysfunction, which is a marker of poor outcome in various cardiac pathologies and can be evaluated by easy and accessible echocardiographic indices, is not yet well established in aortic insufficiency. Thus, we hypothesized that diastolic dysfunction may be associated with the criteria of the severity of aortic insufficiency. The proposal of this study is to conduct a transversal prospective study including consecutive patients referred from outpatient cardiology with aortic valve disease. Patients will be submitted to clinical evaluation and transthoracic echocardiogram. It will be identified if relevant variables of the diastolic function are associated with the unfavorable manifestation of aortic valve disease. (AU)
