Abstract

Smart meters available in the market are able to monitor the global electrical energy consumption of residences in real time. These devices store the value of the total power consumed by individual residences, which is used by the utility for billing purposes and by the customer for tracking the usage. However, since these devices cannot determine the individual consumption of residential appliances, so that the customer cannot determine the best strategies to reduce the bill. In this context, this PhD project will develop methods for consumption estimation of individual residential loads based on the following techniques (a) identification of electrical and non-electrical signatures of individual residential loads, (b) application of data mining techniques in order to identify the signatures in the aggregated signal of power/current, (c) development of a framework (e.g. website), which allows the user to select residential loads to be analyzed, visualize the power consumption, choice best strategies for reduction of the energy demand, etc. Measurement data of 10 real residential houses will be used for analysis. This data was provided by Prof. Dr. Wilsun Xu, from University of Alberta, Canada, which will strategically support this research. (AU)
