Abstract

Despite advances in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment in recent years, HCC remains as the third cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Thus, there is an urgent need to search for biomarkers for the early diagnosis of the disease. Lipidomics techniques associated with mass spectrometry may improve current knowledge on mechanisms involved in the HCC onset and progression with potential application in clinical practice. The combination of lipidomic markers and clinical phenotypes may provide potential diagnostic biomarkers for hepatocellular carcinoma, which will allow an early diagnostic of the cases with better chances of therapeutic success and cure, and a better understanding of the disease evolution.
