Abstract

The B chromosomes (Bs), also known as supernumerary are dispensable elements found in many eukaryotic genomes, including Cichlidae fishes, that are a classic model of rapid adaptive radiation, due to their particular characteristics related to genetics, speciation and evolution. Large scale genomics analyses, involving next generation sequencing was applied in cichlid fish Astatotilapia latifasciata that carry 1-2 B chromosomes. These analyses suggest that B chromosomes of this species may have arisen from a small chromosome fragment of the A genome, followed by the invasion of this fragment by a wide variety of repetitive DNAs and genes. An important sequence that was found in the B chromosomes is the hnRNP Q-like (heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein Q-like) gene that has retrogene characteristics and presents a high number of copies in the B genome. Therefore, this work aims to identify the mechanisms involved in retroinsertion of the hnRNP Q gene in the B chromosome and understand the genomic organization of this sequence. This study will allow better insights on the origin and evolution of this retrogene, as well as a better understanding of the origin and evolution of B chromosomes in the species. (AU)
