Abstract This research aims to study the orthographic and phonetic-phonological adaptation made by Brazilian Portuguese speakers when pronouncing anthroponyms (proper names) of (truly or supposedly) foreign origin, especially those from English language. The intention is to investigate the force of the phonological system of the target language in the process of incorporating foreign words into this system, bringing contributions to the determination of the phonological identity of Brazilian Portuguese from the investigation of the limits between what is and what is not considered "Portuguese", from the point of view of the pronunciation (sound), to its own native speakers. The collection of anthroponyms will be done from frequency lists of enrolled students in a school located in a peripheral region of São Carlos, in São Paulo state. It is intended to interview the students which names were collected, to obtain information about possible different ways to pronounce their names, as well as their nicknames, to analyse the phonological clues provided by this source. The collected information will be transcribed and analysed afterwards from the point of view of non-linear phonological models. (AU) | |
