Abstract This research project proposes a phonological comparative study between Medieval Portuguese (MP) and Brazilian Portuguese (BP) through the analysis of foreign proper names encountered in these two different periods of the language. From the exploration of occurrences of all names recorded in the Cantigas de Santa Maria (CSM) and the profane cantigas (PC), we intend to make a comparative analysis with those ones undertaken by Macedo (2015), which studied phonological adaptation processes in the pronunciation of foreign names in Brazil. For the analysis of MP, it will be used the edition of Mettmann (1986-1989) as a support corpus, and the phonological system that will be considered is the one proposed by Massini-Cagliari (1999, 2005). For the analysis of BP, it will be used the corpus collected by Macedo (2015), consisting of 14.716 names, with the phonological phenomena analyzed according to the nonlinear theory (Hayes, 1995; Clements and Hulme, 1995; for the BP: Lee, 1995 Bisol (ed.), 1996; Cagliari, 1997, 1999; Massini-Cagliari, 1999). The main objective is to make a comparative study of the processes of phonological (non-)adaptation in MP and BP. This type of research was chosen due to the fact that, by pronouncing or creating (in the case of BP) proper names, the speakers eventually provide valuable information for studies of the relationship between language change and phonological identity, when the research explores the boundaries between what is and what is not (or what was and what was not) considered "Portuguese" (or "Galician-Portuguese," in the medieval period), for their own native speakers, in the temporal continuum of the language, from the point of view of the sounds of the language.
