Abstract

This Research Training Project abroad has as the main objective to study the external vocalic sandhi in archaic Portuguese, reflecting on the idea of Prosodic Word, considering the postlexical phonologic processes in archaic Portuguese (AP), through a representative poetic corpus (Cantigas de Santa Maria) of the moment of the language ( XIII century), under the spotlight of Prosodic Phonology (NESPOR and VOGEL, 2007[1986]). It is focused, mainly, the Prosodic Word domain, since we have as objective of study the processes which happen in the interword junctions: elision, diphthongization, crasis, hiatus and some other non-named process by specialized literature. Through the proposed project we intend to clarify and reinforce the necessity of a systematic study of Prosodic Word (or phonologic, as it is treated by Bisol in BP) in AP, the same way it was made for European Portuguese, by Vigário (2003). Besides, through the work developed in a doctoral level and from a corpus still poorly explored (particularly towards linguistic themes - cf. SNOW, 1987, p. 478-480; MASSINI-CAGLIARI, 2005, p. 24-26), we intend to: 1) contribute for deepening of Portuguese prosody history knowledge in the period of its recognition as an "independent" language form Latin; 2) contribute for a better understanding of the rhythm towards current Portuguese, since the elucidation of some characteristics from Portuguese linguistic past will be able to contribute for clarifying facts about its current structure.
