Abstract

The last years of Brazilian monarchy regime were quite interesting when the subject refers to conceptions and proposals about the ideia of "nation". Thus, the "geração de 1870", group of intelectuals and politicians that time, exposed different questions with the intention of making the criticism of monarchy thought pattern, based on romantism, catholicism, patriarchy and slavery. Based on these ideas, added to new conceptions arriving from Europe, the "geração de 1870" appropriated of this repertoire of ideas based on its experience of political marginalization. Our intention in this work is to connect the kind of intelectual formation received by some of the members of that geration in three academic institutions that time: one more traditional (case of "Colégio Pedro II", from Rio de Janeiro), another more modern (like "Colégio Culto à Ciência", from Campinas), and one more, "in the middle of the way", or a kind of mediate school (the "Ginásio Baiano", from Salvador), emphasizing the weight of the influence 1. of academic curriculum and 2. of the work of the teachers 3. in the formation of the political repertoire of the graduate student formed by these institutions, highlighting the agency of these students, especially as regards their support for the abolitionist cause. Therefore, we aim to reconstruct the repertoire of modes of action and thinking transmitted by the three schools. This project, already underway, has a link with another one, "O abolicionismo como movimento social", coordinated by Angela Alonso and funded by Fapesp (proc. 12/08495-6). (AU)
