Abstract

The aim of this project is to know the chemical and ecological status of waters and sediments of Guarapiranga reservoir and discriminate possible adverse factors for biota. To achieve this objective is planned sampling water and sediments for chemical analyses of pesticides, heavy metals and cyanotoxins, as well as are planned sampling sediments to study the benthic invertebrate community. With data compiled, we will try to find statistical patters that could explain the community composition and in consequence what are the environmental or chemical stressors which drive the fauna composition. Laboratory bioassays, with benthic organisms, will be performed in order to discriminate environmental stressors, others than chemicals, as adverse factors for biota, and dismiss possible adaptation of natural community to the environmental conditions. Data obtained in this research will help policymakers and water managers in implementation of policies intended to a best water management and minimization of environmental degradation of the Guarapiranga reservoir.
