Abstract

The master's research to which this project is linked aims at confronting the interpretations of the French Revolution proposed in the nineteenth century by François Guizot and Alexis de Tocqueville. Taking as a starting point the thesis defended by Pierre Rosanvallon in Chapter VIII of the book Le modèle politique français, according to which Guizot is part of a "Jacobin liberalism" that rejects the need for decentralization projects under representative governments, the hypothesis is that differences in political assessments of the French Revolution of the two authors lie mainly in their different views of administrative centralization. The proposed research stage, to be held at Université de Franche-Comté under the supervision of Prof. Frédéric Brahami, aims at investigating the place of administrative centralization in Guizot's political thought, especially in his interpretation of the history of France and, in particular, of the French Revolution - an issue on which Guizot's interpreters are far from reaching a consensus.
