Abstract This internship project presents the proposal of Fernanda Brandão Silva to develop an international scientific collaboration under the supervision of Prof. Salvatore Tabonne. This internship will take place at the Lorraine Research Laboratory in Computer Science and its Applications (LORIA), Université de Lorraine, Vandoeuvre-lès-Nancy, France. The goal of this research project is to study a pertinent application to the approach proposed by Fernanda Brandão Silva in the scope of her Master's project. This approach, named Bag of Visual Graphs (BoVG), attempts to create a robust image descriptor by complementing the Bag-of-Visual-Words model with a second vocabulary that not only considers the frequency of occurrence of visual words, but also their spatial relationships. The task of symbol spotting is a promising application for the proposed approach, since the geometric relations of visual properties contributes to recognize the semantic content of graphical documents and their symbols. Prof. Salvatore Tabonne is already collaborating with the student, he co-authored a paper describing the BoVG method, accepted for publication in the Proceedings of IEEE International Conference on Image Processing 2013, and he has a large experience in symbol spotting domain, being a reference in this field.
