Abstract

This project intends to focus on the restructuring of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra from 1997 to 2008. It is, more specifically, to study the social construction of the work's value, as would say Pierre Bourdieu. This means assuming that the proper cultural and symbolic value of an orchestra is not in his repertoire, but in gaining technical expertise and a reputation in the market of concert music. Which factors (and actors) were important in this process of recovery and recognition that transcends artistic production? In the case of OSESP, I argue that the confluence of political, economic and aesthetic interests allowed that an orchestra once Midsize became a great institution, recognized by peers, by critics and the wider public.
