Cartoon and moral development: a proposal of intervention in types of conflict resolution

Abstract

From a constructivist perspective concerning the styles of conflict resolution, the aim of this study is to analyze the most watched cartoon by participant children, in order to verify the styles of conflict resolution found in the episodes; to understand, based on the observation and judgment analysis and actions of the kids, the influence which the transmission of contents in the cartoon can have in the way children solve hypothetical and real conflicts, and to verify the effect of a certain program of intervention in the formation of active and critical viewers, fostering more appropriate forms interindividual conflict resolution. Forty-five children between 9 and 12 years of age, who attend a unit of social assistance in a city in the state of Sao Paulo, will take part of this study. First, a questionnaire will be applied to identify the most watched cartoon, which will be recorded and analyzed in order to identify the styles of conflict resolution in those episodes. After that, another experimental study will happen, counting on a group of control (GC) and two experimental groups (GE1 and GE2), each one composed of 15 participants, chosen randomly. There will be sessions of exposition to the selected cartoon in GE1 and GE2. In GE2, a program of intervention considering the development of more assertive forms in conflict resolution will be used after those cartoon sessions. To verify the effect of the exposition to those cartoons and the program of intervention, there will be sessions of observation of children's actions in moments of recreation, and the Children's Action Tendency Scale - CATS will be applied in the form of pre and post-tests.
