Abstract This project aims to study the notion of composition in film, through the polarization between realism and formalism. By means of comparative analysis of the theories of André Bazin and Hollis Frampton, it proposes to describe their view of the fundamental aspects of cinema, and to analyze two films (one by Roberto Rossellini and one by Peter Kubelka) which will exemplify certain instances of cinematic realism and formalism as pointed by the aforementioned authors. As it investigates the manner by which those two tendencies oppose themselves, and which facets of composition they reveal, the work also explores the prospect of complementarity, of an approach that considers them as parts of the same spectrum. In this way, the main objective consists of the search for a third film, which represents attributes of both tendencies, so that, by analyzing it, we can focus on less extreme cases of the initial polarity. | |
