Abstract

One of the main goals of the theory of error correcting codes is to minimize the likelihood of errors in coding-transmission-decoding schemes. Considering semantic models for different types of errors that may occur (models that depend on the nature of the information to be transmitted) it becomes worthwhile to substitute the goal of minimizing the likelihood of errors by the goal of minimizing the importance of mistakes. Considering the specific issue of transmission of images, this project aims to quantify the gains that can be realized by this approach and develop effective schemes for joint source-channel coding with unequal error protection, using decoding algorithms determined by metrics defined by partial orders, which enjoy optimal properties in terms of complexity of the algorithm.
