Abstract

Diarrhea is a disease responsible for a high mortality level all over the world, especially in developing countries. In 2003, it was responsible for 21% of children´s death and for the death of 1,5 million people. The major etiologic agents who cause this disease are ETEC (enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli), rotavirus, Vibrio cholera e Shigella ssp. Among these agents, the ETEC is very common among tourists from developed countries that are traveling through countries with low conditions of sanitation. The ETEC produce one or both of two enterotoxins, heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) and heat-stable enterotoxin (ST), they induce the loss of a huge amount of liquids by the intestinal cells. The existing treatments are based on the reposition of liquids and electrolytes and the use of antimicrobials. Both of the treatments show some problems: the first one needs constant attention from the patient, but some hospitals in developing countries don´t have the structure to do this, and the second treatment is only used by travelers and many bacteria are resistant to antimicrobials. Thus, this project has the objective of evaluating the disponibility of a substance (the compound24), which has a great potential to become a more efficient therapy against diarrhea by neutralizing, in some way, the toxins produced by the ETEC.(AU)
