Abstract

This project aims at an ethnographical analysis of the quilombola communities of Mandira, Santa Maria Taquari and Varadouro (all located in Cananéia, São Paulo), considering the effects and transformations produced as the State set rules to recognize their quilombola identity. The notion of "territorial relations" is employed in order to circumscribe the field of relations I propose to analyse. As a social category of recognition, the quilombo becomes attached to new legal instances of political representation and territory social control - the communities newborn legal associations. Such instances, alongside other recent historical contingencies (as the implementation of conservation areas), induce to transformations in the territorial relations practised by these groups. At the same time, the associations, although modelled as a communal means of representation, actualize a series of local relations and meanings which are historically constituted within the groups' territories. I propose using Marshall Sahlins' notion of event (1990) as an initial theoretical approach to understand the local processes of signification of these transformations - or, paraphrasing Goldman (2006), to try to figure out what it is that natives make of their rights.
