Milton Santos: a living archive for an interdisciplinary dialogue: planning on debate

Abstract

This post-doctoral project aims to provide a deeper approach the research that I have been conducting on the geographer Milton Santos (1926-2001). It Is comprised of two main objectives: a) to help with organizing and cataloging the personal document archive of the geographer-a joint effort with other teachers and the Archive Service of the Institute of Brazilian Studies (IEB | USP); b) to analyze existing documents from his personal archive which are connected to the discussion of planning, an interdisciplinary subject very dear to him during his professional and academic life. This project will "move forward and deepen" the research about Milton Santos, considering my interpretation of his epistemologica trajectory, which proposes an analysis and a periodization of his démarche based on the systematic and profound study of his production (books, minor publications, articles and editorial projects produced between 1948 and 2001) during the elaboration of my PhD thesis The epistemological trajectory of Milton Santos. An interpretation based on the centrality of technique, on the dialogues with political economy and on citizenship as praxis (2011). The public access to the document archive of Milton Santos, an intellectual with undeniable importance for Brazilian critical social thought, should encourage greater knowledge about his creative and theoretical process, fostering new research that may be developed in the areas of geography, the study of archives, and the history of ideas-among many others-, thus nurturing an interdisciplinary dialogue.
