Abstract

A categorical grammar is a formal grammar based on the substrutural calculus of Joaquim Lambek. The phenomenon of anaphoric reference represents a challenge for a formal grammar, such as L, does not admit the structural rule of contraction and, therefore, does not admit re-using of lexical resources. In general, the grammatical structures called control structures do not represent an environment of the phenomenon of anaphoric reference. Instead, in this project we will show that the particular phenomenon of control in Portuguese presents a challenge for the logic of Lambek. We will overcome this challenge using the logical tools proposed by categorial grammar in the study of anaphora, evaluating the arguments of two semantical theories, and analyzing the various logical extensions of the Lambek calculus and its associated algebraic structures. As a result of our research, we aim to get contributions to three distinct contexts: I) for the logic -proposing an extension of L and studying the associated algebraic structures; II) for the semantics -studying the Property and the Proposition theories; and III) Linguistics -contributing to the discussion for the phenomenon of the control from the study of particular features that this phenomenon exposes in Portuguese.
