Abstract

This research aims on investigating and discussing the management process of the international Biennial of São Paulo. Since its creation in 1951, by the Maecenas Francisco Matarazzo Sobrinho, the Biennial went through many moments of instability, defined by aesthetical, political and organizational discussions. The debates and polemics around the exhibition curtailed both the artistic and the institutional levels. While pointing out many controversies throughout its history, we will not dispute the exposition's artistic quality: it is undeniable that the Biennial plays a key role in the visual arts, both regionally and globally. The adverse periods in the exhibition's history, despite touching the artistic piece, were mostly directly linked to trembles in its management structure. For the sake developing a proper scheme for studying this history, we will limit the corpus of this research to the editions in between 1951 and 2012, included. The total amount of thirty exhibits will be divided in three phases that seem to share some commons aspects in their institutional engines. They are: the years in which the Biennial was coupled up with the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo - 1951 to 1961; the 'Matarazzo era', period in which the exposition management was centralized in the Maecenas - 1963 to 1977; and the period in which the Biennial Foundation becomes an actual business entity - 1979 to 2012. The proposition for this project was born from the inspiration of this history of glory and shame. During its course, the research will focus on gathering data around the exhibition's management, highlighting its origins and developments. While studying the creation of the institution and its maturing, we will try to understand its organizational processes, generating corpus for further practical and academic researches around the cultural management process.
