Abstract

The present research aims at investigating and discussing the management process of the Bienal de São Paulo. Since its creation in 1951 by Maecenas Francisco Matarazzo Sobrinho, the Bienal went through many instability moments, marked by aesthetic, politic and organizational discussions. The debates and polemics around the exhibition have crimped both the artistic and the institutional aspects. While pointing out the many disputes through the history of the exhibition, its artistic quality is not questioned; it is indisputable that the Bienal exerts a key role on the visual arts both nationally and internationally. The periods of setback through the history of the exhibition were mainly related to management issues, and not attributed to artistic questions. In an effort to organize the study of such history, the corpus of research was limited to the exhibitions comprehended between 1951 and 2012, included. The total amount of 30 exhibitions is further organized into four phases that apparently present some unity in their institutional mechanisms. These phases are: the initial years, in which the Bienal was linked to the Museum of Modern Art ¿ 1951 to 1961; the Matarazzo era, when the Maecenas centralized the management work ¿ 1962 to 1975; the period that enables the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo as a private company ¿ 1976 to 1990; and finally the latest years, when the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo starts leveraging the Cultural incentive laws and bonds closely with the private initiative ¿ 1991 to 2012. This research emerges from the aforementioned history of glories and failures, and gathers data around the management of the exhibition, highlighting its origins and consequences. It further aims at unveiling the Fundação¿s organizational processes through the analysis of its building and development. As a result, research material for future work into the cultural management field is being created (AU)
