Abstract

Infectious diseases still are important problems of Public Health in Brazil despite the decrease number of cases and deaths due to infectious disease in recent decades. This reduction is mainly observed among vaccine-preventable diseases. The objective of this issue is improving laboratory surveillance for infectious diseases in Pathology Center of Institute Adolfo Lutz with addition of etiologic definition and possible detection of emerging and reemerging diseases in the region. The project proposes a fellowship in Infectious Diseases Pathology Branch unit of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) where studies using histopathology, immunohistochemistry, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), in situ hybridization, and tissue ultrastructure from confirmed or suspected cases of infectious diseases are carried out on samples from different regions of the United States and the World. The project results will be useful for the development of new specific strategies to perform diagnostic investigation of possible infectious causes of death and identification of new infectious agents circulating in São Paulo state or Brazil. The proposal meets the needs of our state mainly when the country is committed to promote two major events that will attract tourists worldwide (World Cup and Olympics). (AU)
