Biomechanical effect of use of orthoses in gait in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Abstract

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a disease determined by absence of dystrophin protein. The disease progression cause loss of muscular strenght, changes in range of motion and body composition. These changes lead to loss of ambulation, sedentary lifestyle and obesity. The bioelectrical impedance and 10 meters walk test (T10) are used to follow patients with DMD regarding body composition and gait analyze, respectively. In a previous study realized in this laboratory, the T10 detected temporal changes that influenced the loss of gait. The orthoses is an therapeutic strategy used to prolong ambulation. Thus, the aims this study are to evaluate the biomechanical effect of orthoses in gait and, follow disease progression through the acquisition of quantitative functional data during the study period. Male children with DMD will be followed clinically for a maximum period of 6 months in CER - HCFMRP-USP. The patients will be evaluated considering: muscular strength by Hand-Held dynamometer (Lafayette Instrument, Lafayette, UK), goniometry (passive range of motion) of the lower limbs, T10, body composition analysis by bioelectrical impedance and computerized gait analysis. To assess the results will be used descriptive analysis and regression models of mixed effects. (AU)
