Abstract

This research aims to systematize the data related to Panathenaic amphorae at Delos (the bibliographical debate and the discussion of the various documentary forms), especially in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, to understand a specific phenomenon of this period: the situation of the Panathenaic vases in the context where their production decreases and then disappears, coincidentally the growth of figurative citations to this kind of vase. The choice of Delos (understood in the context of a very close relationship with Rhenea) is justified by the quantitative data (the second most numerous findings just after Athens in Hellenistic and Roman period) and the profusion of figurative citations to Panathenaic amphorae in many media at that time. Thus, the data that have been partially published are presented together, based on the logic of the specific dynamics in Delos-Rhenea and its relations with Athens, and the phenomenon of modification of the production, use and citations of these objects in the Mediterranean this period.
