Abstract

Irregular seedlings stands in the field is a limiting factor in commercial bell pepper production. Seed priming can become a promising alternative due to benefits on the germination and seedling emergence, especially under unfavorable environmental conditions. The combination of the priming technique with the addition of plant growth regulators may also result in additional benefit, favoring the antioxidant enzymes activity, seedlings development and stress tolerance. However, further studies should be conducted to the improvement of the technique with bioregulators and confirmation of its possible advantages. In order to evaluate the efficiency of drum priming of bell pepper seeds using bioregulator will be performed pre-germination treatments in 24-epibrassinolide on the germination and seed vigor. The research will be developed in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science at The Ohio State University - OSU in Columbus, United States, using two bell pepper cultivars (AF-6 and AF-7) each represented respectively by three and four hybrid seed lots. Germination and seed vigor of the lots will be evaluated by germination, germination first count, emergence speed, seedling image analysis by software SVIS developed at the OSU, and the antioxidant response of seeds, determined by activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POX), by using of the polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis technique (PAGE).
