Abstract

The main goal of this project is the same as in the PhD project which is to understand how a biological system transitions from one state to another through studying the dynamics of reconstructed gene expression networks. From a starting point we are going to analyze two different biological models. The first one is about the effect of the immune system in the homeostatic functions of the intestinal epithelium and the second one deals with cervical cancer. The work has already been started with data from the first model. The results achieved are quite consistent with what we know about the functioning of the immune system. In both studies, it is necessary to make a heavy analysis with gene expression data of around 1000 databases. For this, large computational resources such as computer cluster at the Center for Genomic Research and Biocomputing (CGRB) at Oregon State University (OSU) can improve and accelerate the research. In addition, at OSU we can count with a trans-disciplinary team of professionals from many different areas and labs, which will intensify and diversify the knowledge of the candidate through seminars, conferences and journal clubs.
