Abstract

Tabapuã is a zebu beef cattle breed originated in Brazil, highly adapted to Brazilian environmental conditions. The objectives of this study are to calculate effective population size, effective number of founders, effective number of ancestors, identify inbreeding and their effects in the population and estimate genetic parameters and genetic trends for weaning weight adjusted to 210 days of age, age at first calving, calving interval and accumulated productivity in Tabapuã beef cattle animals, aiming to support the Tabapuã breeding program. The data that will be used in this study are from animals allocated in pasture with weaning being performed at 6 to 8 months of age. The reproductive management consists in a breeding season ranging between 60 to 120 days with controlled mating or artificial insemination. Genetic parameters and breeding values will be estimated by restricted maximum likelihood, by multi-trait analysis whose general model will include additive genetic random effect, residual effect and fixed effect of contemporary groups (CG). For the trait weaning weight, we will also include in the model the maternal additive random genetic effect and the fixed effects (linear and quadratic) of the cows' age at calving. Genetic trends will be obtained from a linear regression of mean predicted breeding values (PBV) based on birth year.At-statistic will be used to test the hypothesis that the regression coefficient for each equation is equal to zero. The effect of inbreeding on traits will be estimated by linear regression of animals' phenotypic mean as a function of the inbreeding coefficient class.
