Abstract

The most used titanium alloy in biological applications is the Ti-6Al-4V (% in weight), however there are reports that vanadium cause cytotoxic effects and adverse reactions in some tissues, while aluminum has been associated with neurological disorders. In this sense, there is a need of search for alloys with better mechanical properties and biocompatibility and the most promising titanium-based alloys are those that have niobium, zirconium, tantalum and molybdenum as alloying elements. The purpose of this project is to study the effect of the substitutional element in the structure, microstructure, some selected mechanical properties and biocompatibility of Ti-alloys-10Mo xZr (x = 5, 10, 15 and 20 % in weight). In parallel, the aim is also to investigate the influence of oxygen in solid solution in these alloys, in some selected mechanical properties, in particular hardness and elasticity modulus. This project is a continuation of the study of Ti-Mo system, in which at the Scientific Initiation with the support of FAPESP (grant 2008/ 00450-8) the candidate worked on preparation, characterization and studies on the effect of oxygen in the anelastic properties and biocompatibility of the Ti-15%Mo, and in the Master (grant 2011/03464-2, running), in which the student has prepared and characterized the Ti-25% Mo and Ti-30% Mo alloys and is studying the effect of oxygen in solid solution in their mechanical properties and biocompatibility.
