Abstract

The main objective of this project is to study the effects of active pauses on trapezius and serratus anterior muscles during a simulated industrial repetitive task. The investigation will be based on three studies aiming at (1) synthesizing the current methods of active pauses' application, in workers who perform monotonous, static and repetitive tasks (Study 1); (2) investigating the effect of passive and active pauses on trapezius and serratus anterior electromyographical activity and oxygenation during a standardized repetitive task performed by healthy subjects (Study 2) and by subjects with chronic trapezius myalgia (Study 3). The literature review will be performed using the following databases: PubMed-MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, PEDro and Web of Science, through the combination of the following key-words: active pause, effect, assessment, evaluation and work. The procedure used to select papers will be based on current guidelines. The quality of the studies will be performed using part of a scale proposed by Ariens in 2000. The results of this review will allow to plan how active pauses will be applied on the Studies 2 and 3. The experimental procedure used to evaluate active pauses in the laboratory will be based on a standardized repetitive task (non-computer based task). Fifteen healthy women will be evaluated for muscle activity (surface electromyography), and muscle oxygenation (near-infrared spectroscopy). The neck-shoulder region will be investigated (descending, transverse and ascending part of the trapezius, and serratus anterior muscles). Both head position and arm elevation postures will be recorded in order to control possible confounders. The same procedure will be performed with fifteen experienced women who present chronic (more than six months) trapezius myalgia (Study 3). We believe that the results will contribute with scientific evidence on the beneficial effect of active pauses and to support practitioners to better pauses at work. (AU)
