Abstract

In the course of XIV century, the English crown is involved in wars against the Scots and Frenchmen. At this juncture, the writing of history, although still highly confined to the monastic circles, gradually becomes an activity performed by men tied to the realm administration. Committed to register the actions and attitudes of their equals, as well as of the monarchs, such men enrolled the narratives on the mixture of biblical and pagan models originated on former times, on the oral testimony of those who witnessed the events and in the documentation produced by the government bureaucracy. The present work aims to perceive the changes on the writing of history with regard to former times, considering by whom it is written and to the arrangements priorities regarding the conflicts. Therefore, our main hypothesis assumes that the register of contends by historians, in some way related to such struggles, in opposition to remote watchers, is the main ordination principle of chronicle writing in such context.
