Abstract

In this project we intend to synthesize, characterize and study biomimetic catalysts consisting of metalloporphyrins (MeP) immobilized on silica matrix. We will functionalize two materials, that consisting of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles dispersed in to MCM-41 mesoporous silica in order to obtain the heterogeneous catalysts with expanded pores (Fe3O4@nSiO2@MCM-41(E)-MnP) and non-expanded pores (Fe3O4@nSiO2@MCM-41-MnP). We will characterize both catalysts by infrared absorption spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms and electron microscopy (scanning and transmission). We will assess the catalytic activities of the materials in the oxidation of the hydrocarbons (Z)-cyclooctene and cyclohexane, using PhIO or m-CPBA as oxidants. We wish to understand the oxidative processes and relate then to structural and morphological properties such as the nature of the microenvironment created in the active site of MnP and the accessibility of substrates to this site. Futhermore to evaluate the behavior of the biomimetic catalysts Fe3O4@nSiO2@MCM-41(E) and Fe3O4@nSiO2@MCM-41 we will conduct metabolism studies of the antidepressant mirtazapine (MTZ) and analyze the metabolites by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
