Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder associated with an increased risk of infections affecting the mucous membranes and soft tissues. Experimental studies have demonstrated that diabetic animals have reduced adhesion and migration of cells to the inflammatory site. This decrease is following by low levels of secretion of TNF-±, IL-1², IL-6, and IL-10 as well as low expression of ICAM-1. It should be emphasized that the treatment of diabetic animals with insulin reverses these effects observed on cell adhesion and migration, corroborating the literature reporting the immunomodulatory role of insulin. Thus, this project aims to assess the role of insulin on the secretion of cytokines, important chemical mediators involved in the inflammatory response induced by carrageenan in animals healthy and diabetic (alloxan, 60 mg/kg, iv), treated or not with insulin. For that it will be evaluated: a) blood glucose (glucose monitor), b) the number of peritoneal cells lavage (PeL), b) concentrations of cytokines (IL-1², TNF-±, IL-6, IFN-³, IL-4, IL-10, CINC-1, and CINC-2) in PeL (ELISA).
