Abstract

The snake venoms are a complex mixture of proteins, nucleotides and inorganic ions which confer toxic properties to these venoms. It is known that some homeothermic animals and most snakes have natural resistance against envenoming by venomous snakes and can survive in case of accidents with these animals. However, neutralizing mechanisms responsible for this resistance are still relatively unknown. Experimental evidences indicate that the natural resistance is due to the protective properties of the plasma of these animals. Therefore, this work aims, through western blotting analysis, which verifies the occurrence of immune reaction, and affinity chromatography, which consists in the interaction of proteins to their specific ligands, to study plasma proteins from B. jararaca snake responsible for protection against its accidental self-envenoming.
