Abstract

The abundant empirical evidence that early childhood education can contribute to the child development in a critical phase of their lives combined with the increase of women participation in the labor market has intensified the search for child care vacancies in Brazil. On the other hand, it is also well documented the current process of demographic transition in Brazil, which suggests the number of children under three years of age will be lower in the coming years. In this context, the objectives of this project is build a model to forecast the evolution of the demand for daycare centers in Brazil that takes into account these two contrasting trends and, through it, delineate scenarios for its evolution. In this way, making clear the demand behavior posteriorly, we contribute to the decision-making process of our policymakers, who must determine the rate of expansion of the system and ensure that schools built today will not remain idle (for lack of demand) in the future. The data to be used in this research are those of the Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (PNAD), collected by IBGE. (AU)
