Abstract

This research program will define the methodological and technical devices for the study of the Guarani territorial struggles in southern Mato Grosso do Sul between the decades of 1940 and 1970. The aim is to study the indigenous struggles and the formation of the Brazilian national state as a simultaneous process. Within this view, dominate groups and elites are produced in relation to each other in a process that takes place in a context - a field of force - of unequal power and entails reciprocal appropriations, expropriations and transformations. Through the use of this methodological frame, the research pretends to go beyond current interpretations based on essencialized conceptions of indigenous cultures and on reified notions such as "State" and "resistance", thus contributing to the debate on indigenous territorial struggles in the region.
