Abstract

The subfamily Chauliognathinae (Coleoptera, Cantharidae), on the present classification, is composed of two tribes: Chauliognathini and Ichthyurini. A cladistic analysis, held as a Master degree dissertation, revealed that Chauliognathini is not monophyletic and recovered the distribution of the genera according to the traditional classification of Miskimen where Chauliognathini comprises species with long elytra while Ichthyurini comprises species with short elytra. This definition of the tribes had been refuted by recent authors. Although the clade Chauliognathinae with short elytra (Ichthyurini sensu Miskimen) appears well resolved and informative in that phylogeny, the clade Chauliognathinae with long elytra (Chauliognathini sensu Miskimen) is formed by a large polytomy between species without a clear definition of the genera and their positions. This group is composed of ca. 550 species grouped in six genera without a clear definition and insufficient to represent their great morphological variability. In this group is included Microdaiphron, a small genus with problematic taxonomy and uncertain phylogenetic position. The objectives of this research proposal are to conduct a taxonomic review of Microdaiphron and a cladistic analysis with morphological data of the tribe Chauliognathini sensu Miskimen, including subsequent updates, to elucidate the phylogenetic position, the delimitation and characterization of the genera and species groups that compose it. For this study, the largest possible number of species of all genera will be included, including the type-species. As outgroup will be studied species of Ichthyurini sensu Miskimen and other Cantharidae subfamilies. (AU)
