Evaluation of long-term stability of Class III treatment

Abstract

Introduction: Due to the esthetic impairment and unfavorable prognosis to orthopedic and orthodontic mechanics, Class III malocclusions present a special interest for the orthodontist. Different studies have shown the involvement of several dentoskeletal components in the etiology of this malocclusion. Because growth causes changes in these components, in order to achieve occlusal stability between the jaws, it would be ideal to monitor treated patients until the end of facial growth. However, the significance of this measure is not emphasized by the literature and therefore by orthodontists. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the long-term stability of Class III nonextraction treatment in patients who had undergone orthodontic treatment, with an initial age of 12 years and had finished treatment for at least five years. Methods: Occlusal and cephalometric evaluation will be performed on 30 treated patients and 30 control cases selected from the Department of Orthodontics at Bauru Dental School - USP files. Changes occurred between the stages in the experimental group will be analyzed with paired t-tests. Changes occurred in the post-treatment period will be compared with the changes occurred in the control group with independent t-tests. To assess the influence of the initial cephalometric variables on the amount of changes occurred after treatment, multiple linear regression analysis will be performed.
