Abstract

The development of sustainable technologies for the utilization of lignocelullosic biomass as those resulting from agricultural and forest activities is a part of a worldwide effort to biofuels, chemicals and energy development. In Brazil, the main biomass is sugarcane bagasse, which has several applications and it has been used in the sugar-alcohol mills to generate electricity at the same time that can it can be used in research to obtain several value-added products, such as butanedioic acid, also known as succinic acid. Currently, this acid is produced by chemical synthesis involving hydrolysis of petroleum products, which is not associated with environmentally friendly processes, generating pollution levels. Considering the widespread use of succinic acid as a specialty chemical for applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries as well as basis for a series of intermediates and final products important in the chemical industry, especially bio-polymers from succinate, this project aimed at production of succinic acid from a chemistry alternative route, the biotechnological route. In this context, it will evaluate the production of acid by pre-selected bacterias from different conditions grown in sugarcane bagasse hydrolisate rich in pentose, since there are few studies of this production from C5 sugars.
