Abstract

In plants, iron (Fe) is one of the most important key elements. For example, Fe is a fundamental component of enzymes involved in electron transfer, being thus part of the photochemical reactions of photosynthesis, nitrate and sulfate reduction as well as nitrogen assimilation during, for example, biological nitrogen fixation. Thus, Fe deficiency responses have received much attention since a series of molecular, biochemical and morphological changes in important crops. Recent evidence has shown that ethylene and auxin are key components during Fe deficiency responses. However, the hormonal control of Fe deficiency still quite complex due to the well documented interactions between hormones. Thus, considering the role of auxin and ethylene in the responses to Fe deficiency, the following questions are necessary: the molecular, biochemical and morphological changes depend on the interaction between these hormones during Fe deficiency? To try to answer these questions, the aim of this research is to study the interaction between auxin and ethylene during Fe deficiency responses in tomato, one of the most important crops in the world.
