Abstract

In 1961, Herstein posed several problems about Jordan, Lie, and group structure of simple rings. In particular, he was interested in the description of Jordan homomorphisms, Lie homomorphisms and maps preserving multiplicative commutators. The main part of this project is dedicated to the latter problem. In 2000s, Herstein's Lie map problems have been solved by means of the theory of functional identities. Until recently, this theory did not contain any results for sets that are not closed under addition, such as the set of all invertible elements. In this project we will develop the theory of functional identities for sets which are not closed under addition. This will permit us to study Herstein's problem and obtain some other applications.
