Abstract

Mangroves swamps are complex ecosystems of great productivity, which are distributed along the coast of tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The major input that these ecosystems receive comes from mangrove fallen leaves that are mainly decomposed by bacteria, fungi and zoosporic organisms. Zoosporic organisms are a polyphyletic group of eukaryotes that belong to the kingdoms Fungi, Chromista (Straminipila pro parte) and Protozoa. The Phylum Oomycota, belonging to Kingdom Chromista, theme of this project, are saprotrophs or parasites organisms in many different ecosystems and appear to be well adapted to changing conditions of salinity, pH and temperature that occur daily in the mangrove ecosystem due to tidal fluctuations. Their presence on mangrove fallen leaves is well-recognized worldwide however, only a few studies have been carried out in Brazilian mangrove swamps. This project aims at assessing the occurrence and diversity of zoosporic organisms from samples of water and fallen leaves of a mangrove swamp in ''Parque Estadual da Ilha do Cardoso (PEIC)'', Cananéia, São Paulo State.
