Abstract

Currently the cane sugar crop is one of the major monocultures of the country, having a strong impact on the economy and also in the environment. The sugar cane vinasse, one of the main waste generated in the processing of sugar cane into ethanol, has a great potential polluter, front large volume produced and their physicochemical characteristics. The pollution of lakes and rivers, by infiltration of waste disposed in the soil as fertilizer, for example, noteworthy since such compounds may contain toxic elements, causing changes in the aquatic and/or terrestrial ecosystems. In order to mitigate these effects, pretreatment of this waste is a viable alternative to reduce impacts into the environment. In this sense, this project provides for the analysis of the toxic potential of sugar cane vinasse chemically treated with lime (CaO) to increase the pH, using fish (Oreochromis niloticus) as a test organism. After adjustment of pH vinasse to a neutral form (pH = 7), individuals will be expose to different sugar cane vinasse dillutions in water. After exposure will be held: a) analysis of their erythrocytes through the micronucleus test with nuclear abnormalities associated and the comet assay, in order to detect possible changes in the nuclear DNA of these animals b) histopathological analyzes of their gills for toxicological analysis in this organ by the direct contact with the water.
