Abstract

The present project will be divided in two studies. The aim of Study 1 will be to evaluate the influence of smoke (1 pack of cigarettes per 5 days) and pH cycling (30 day cycle) on chemical composition and microhardness of surface and sub-surface of dental substrate. For that, 40 bovine incisors fragments (enamel and dentin) will be divided into 4 groups (n = 10) according to the following: G1 - without any treatment (control group), G2 - exposure to cigarette smoke, G3 - exposure to pH cycling; and G4 - exposure to smoke and pH cycling. After that, the samples will be analyzed by EDS and microhardness test. The aim of Study 2 will be to evaluate the influence of cigarette smoke in tooth-restoration bond strength. Samples of bovine incisors enamel and samples of bovine incisor dentin will be divided into 8 groups (n=10) per substrate, according to adhesive systems (ScotchbondTM Multi-Purpose - 3M ESPE, Single Bond 2 - 3M ESPE; Clearfil SE Bond - Kuraray; and Single Universal Bond - 3M ESPE) and smoke exposure (no exposure; exposure to 1 pack per day for 5 days). Samples will be restored with a microhybrid composite Filtek Z250 (3M Espe) and the bond strength will be evaluated by microtensile test in dentin and microshear test in enamel. Results will be analyzed statistically at pre-set alpha of 0.05. (AU)
